Buckland’s first league game of the season was away against Echelford, a side with several talented players. Buckland arrived on a chilly but dry evening ready to make amends for the tournament defeat to Laleham.
Buckland kicked off and soon made their intentions clear by attacking the Echelford goal from the start. The first goal came from a cross come shot from Layla out on the wing. Whether it was an intended shot or not, it was a good finish, that left the keeper rooted to the spot.
That early goal opened the floodgates. Three Buckland goals quickly put the girls in a commanding position. Goals from Sude, Jess and Ocean, plus an unfortunate own goal left the score at 6 – 0 at the break. Echelford did create opportunities of their own and their playmaker was clearly a capable footballer. However, our defence stood strong and the girls passed the ball around the pitch with ease.
The second half started much in the same way the first ended, a poor pass from the kick off gave Sude the ball who powered through, her perseverance paying off, driving the ball low into the bottom corner for her third of the match.
With the fading light, Echelford did manage to score a consolation goal, their play maker rounding the Buckland defence and finishing low to Aimee’s left hand post. This did revitalise Echelford, who pushed forward looking for more goals. Both, Aimee between the posts, making several good saves, and Hope and Chloe in defence, Echelford were kept at bay.
Buckland continued to cause problems for the Echelford defence, and soon found the net several more times. With Jess completing her hatrick. With the failing light the final whistle was blown. The final score 9 – 1.
Another fantastic performance by the Buckland girls’ team. Well done!
