Dear Parents, Carers & Guardians

We have been made aware of an app called ‘Momo’ and would like to provide you with the following information. Momo appears to contact children via WhatsApp and other social media platforms including Kids YouTube and Peppa Pig & Paw Patrol videos.

The videos feature Momo, (a haunting character with bulging eyes) and the challenge involves young people being dared to message the girl in the picture. The challenges are light-hearted and fun at the outset, however this game experience quickly darkens, absorbing players who are encouraged to perform acts of violence and self-harm through a series of progressively risky challenges. Momo will then reply with violent images or even threaten people if they do not follow her orders.

We urge parents to be vigilant of their children’s online activities and to encourage your children to speak to you if they have any concerns.

Below are two articles with information that you may find useful:

The P.S.N.I. (Police Service in Northern Ireland) has issued an urgent warning about a disturbing ‘self-harm game’ that encourages young children to harm themselves and in some instances, to take their own lives.
